Help Us Bring the Life-Saving Gift of Clean Water to the People of Ethiopia.

The global water crisis is one of the biggest public health crises of our day.  Nearly 1000 children die every day from drinking contaminated water.  These deaths are so common and so frequent that the world is no longer outraged.  The deaths occur to the least of these… children, mostly in rural areas of the developing world, born into extreme poverty. We’ve become numb to these daily deaths, but we shouldn’t be.  Because it’s so simple to address.

  • $500 provides clean water, handwashing and sanitation education to transform 10 people
  • $2,500 provides clean water, handwashing and sanitation education to transform 50 people
  • $12,500 provides clean water, handwashing and sanitation education to transform 250 people
  • $25,000 provides clean water, handwashing and sanitation education to transform 500 people

Here’s the reason for these deaths.  Water is still collected by hundreds of millions of people from rivers and lakes and open wells.  In fact, 785 million people do not have access to a basic clean water source for their homes.  That’s 1 out of every 10 people on the planet.

And it’s not just people’s homes that lack clean water.  Half the schools in Africa don’t have a clean water source.   Half the health care facilities in the developing world don’t have water or soap.   Imagine if your doctor or nurse had no way to wash their hands between patients. Mothers have to bring their own water to wash themselves and their newborn babies.   Of course, this means infections spread and what should be a miraculous and joyous occasion of birth can be a death sentence.

You can’t live long without water, so people are forced to drink water that is contaminated with bacteria, viruses and parasites.    This causes millions of cases of dysentery, typhoid, and cholera.

Here’s perhaps the biggest tragedy.  We know how to solve this.  There are a lot of complex problems in the world but providing a clean water source in a rural community that provides water for households, schools and health care facilities is something we know how to do.   We have the technology now.  It’s proven, it’s sustainable, and it’s cheap.   And, it’s one of the most cost-effective way to save lives.

Water is so fundamental to development.   If we don’t get water right, then a community will stay in poverty despite our best efforts.   But, when we get water right, it changes everything.   Kids are healthy because they’re not sick from dirty water.  There’s not growth stunting that occurs when kids have persistent diarrhea.  They can go to school and get an education instead of hauling water.   Women can be freed from the slavery of hauling water every day and pursue economic opportunities.  Communities and lives are transformed.

World Vision has become the largest nongovernmental provider of clean drinking water – reaching one new person with clean water every 10 seconds.    We’re committed to reach everyone, everywhere we work with clean water by 2030 – some 50 million people.  We have an excellent track record of results -having reached more than 17 million people with clean water from 2016 to 2020.

In Ethiopia, about 26 million people lack access to clean water.  Our goal is to reach more than 1,800,000 Ethiopians with clean water between 2021-2025.

World Vision works with communities to ensure that the water systems that we provide continue to provide lasting change.  We establish water committees composed of both men and women from the community that create a fee collection system to ensure money is available for ongoing maintenance and repairs.   We not only provide clean water sources throughout the community but also directly into the rural health care facilities and schools.  We have partnered with Sesame Street to bring the WASH-UP! effort into schools – a program using the Muppets Elmo and Raya that empowers children to be positive change agents in communities to ensure safe water storage, hand washing, and safe sanitation.

Many of the water systems provided in Ethiopia are solar powered mechanized water systems.   Our hydrogeologists and drilling rig teams dig a borehole in a community and then install an overhead array of solar panels to power a submersible pump placed in the borehole.   The water is pumped into an overhead storage tank placed in an elevated location in the community where water can then flow through a pipeline to various collection points near people’s homes and directly into the schools and local health care facility.

Please help us bring lasting change to communities in Ethiopia with your gift of life-saving clean water.

Our Commitment

At World Vision, stewardship is an integral part of everything we do. In rare cases where donations exceed what is needed, or where local conditions prevent program implementation, World Vision will redirect funds to similar activities to help children and families in need.

The multiplying effect from grants and donated goods may change throughout the year on identical or similar offers due to variations in the start and end dates of donor grants and our programs.
