Art and music instruction can be especially beneficial for children with troubled backgrounds or impoverished living conditions. For Eduardo Arevalo in El Salvador, the gift of music altered the course of his life forever.
Before starting violin lessons, the 12-year-old struggled with a violent temper, was apathetic about school, and constantly fought with classmates. Adults didn’t know what to do with him.
Music allowed Eduardo to channel his energy into an art form. “He always had an aggressive and violent attitude,” says Eduardo’s school principal. “He has really surprised us . . . he is now an outstanding student in the music class and he is really studious in his violin classes and friendlier with his classmates.”
Eduardo’s enthusiasm for music and his violin are boundless. “I had never seen a violin, but I like how it sounds,” says the budding music artist. “I can spend hours and hours playing a song. I like it. When I grow up, I want to be a musician. I want to be a music teacher to teach other children.”
