Project of Maternity Health Rehabilitation
Pierre Faye - Posted on May 18, 2009
Built in 1976, the maternity section of the health post of Tattaguine has never been restored. The state of the building is visible with her cracked walls. It has only a capacity of eight beds which have never been changed. “I have not seen in the file left by my predecessor where it is mentioned the date that that they have been changed,” Emiliane Gueye the nurse says.
This old maternity clinic serves eight villages and it is very frequent to see women delivering in the waiting room when the delivery room is full.
This reflects the hard working conditions of the staff of the health post generally, among which there is a nurse, three stout women, one community health agent (help male nurse), one medicines salesman and one guard. The renewal of population’s confidence in this health post is the new fruit of the good work and of motivation of the staff.
There is still, however, much work to be done: the frequency of women visits during the antenatal consultations is low, and some women prefer to go to give birth in other health posts because they better delivery conditions.
Health is a service that was transferred by the State to local government to run. The rural council contributes to improve the situation; however, it has limited means. This situation is what justifies the intervention of World Vision, as partner for the restoration of the maternity clinic where basic health services are also offered.
In addition to these services at the local level, the staff also makes visits to remote areas to do advanced strategies in the health huts, postpartum follow-ups so as to fight against infant mortality and counseling in the fight against the HIV/AIDS.
The maternity of Tattaguine counts on World Vision, among their partners, as someone whom all the community of Tattaguine counts to solve the problem of the health by supporting the increase in the size of the delivery room, the renewal of beds and mattress, the change of the delivery table, the construction of a room for the nurse and wash room, the construction of a room for antenatal observation and a room for consultation.
The rehabilitation of the maternity clinic, planned by World Vision, awakens the hope of the population, particularly the staff of the health post, that the health post in Tattaguine will once again be a place people can count on receiving good care in a good environment. “An attractive and well equipped post health post is the dream of everybody in Tataguine.” Emiliane said.
