Welcome to Tattaguine, Senegal

About Tattaguine

Located in the Fatick region of Senegal, the Tattaguine rural community has 24,273 inhabitants who live in 15 villages spread across an area of approximately 100 square miles. Serere people are the dominant ethnic group making up 95 percent of the community. Wolof, Bambara, and Diola populations make up the other 5 percent of the community. While Islam is the main religion of the country, Christians make up 40 percent of the Tattaguine population which includes Roman Catholics, Presbyterians, Lutherans, and Assemblies of God.

About 66 percent of the children have access to education. Many young girls are taken out of school after their 6th grade exam.

The Sahel-Sudanese climate of the area is hot and dry from November to May. The rainy months of June to October bring 18 to 27 inches of precipitation per year.  Agriculture is the main economic activity and 95% of Tattaguine inhabitants are farmers, the rest--mainly the Wolof people--are traders. The farmers mostly grow millet which is the staple food for breakfast and dinner. Rice is frequently eaten at lunch. The population lives in traditional huts made of clay bricks and thatched cottages.

The Need in Tattaguine

The Need: Education

  • Limited access to good educational opportunities leads to low enrollment.
  • Improved quality of education in schools is needed.

 The Response

  •  With World Vision’s help, classrooms are being built and equipped to create an environment that draws and retains students.
  • Teachers are being trained to provide excellence in education and closer learning supervision for students.
  • Teams of community members are being formed to help supervise schools and build capacity for managing schools.

The Need: Hygiene and Health Care

  • As the photo at the right illustrates, medical facilities and health services are in great need of improvement to provide even a basic level of health care in Tattaguine.
  • Families are not aware of good health and hygiene practices.

The Response

  • World Vision is working with the community to improve access to health services.
  • Children and families are receiving education about good health and hygiene practices to reduce exposure to disease.
  • Increased technical support is being provided to health stations and midwives.
  • Partnerships among community health committees, the Medical District and its facilities, the rural council and health care recipients are being strengthened to improve the overall quality of health care.

The Need: Economic Development

  • Low household incomes are common in the area, making it difficult for parents to provide even the basic necessities of life for their families.

The Response

  • World Vision is working with the Rural Council and other local groups to help Tattaguine families develop sources of sustainable income.
  • Farmers are receiving access to loans to promote income generating activities and boost agricultural production.
  • World Vision is working along with other organizations to provide drip irrigation systems for farmers to enable sustainable, year-round farming.
  • Access to land, seeds, and training is helping local farmers boost their harvests to improve both nutrition and income.

Need: Leadership Development

  •  The community needs leaders who will work with local authorities to mobilize communities around development programs.

The Response

  • The Community Board in the World Vision project is working with community members and governmental support organizations to develop community leadership that will be equipped to participate in policy-making decisions at the local, departmental, and regional levels.
  • Local authorities are being supported by the Community Board which is providing services to implement local development plans.
  • Support is being provided to help communities set up reliable management structures and tools.

Need: Family Involvement

  • Families need assistance in understanding their roles and responsibilities for participating in the World Vision sponsorship program, particularly in the area of Child Rights.

The Response

  • World Vision is organizing training sessions on Child Rights for communities so that they understand their importance.
  • Parents are participating in sponsorship training.
